What is Semax?
Semax 10mg is a short peptide made in the lab from a piece of ACTH. Most of its paper trail leads back to Moscow.
Seven amino acids make up Semax, in the order Met-Glu-His-Phe-Pro-Gly-Pro. Amino acids are the links that every protein is strung from. The opening four links are borrowed from ACTH, a hormone the body releases under stress, and three extra links close the chain.
The design took shape in Moscow labs, the Institute of Molecular Genetics first among them. Much of the writing about it is in Russian. Nothing here makes the work unsound, but it does mean that a few related Moscow groups have told most of the story.
What the 4 PubMed papers cited for Semax looked at, 1997 to 2020
Rats came first. A 2006 study gave Semax to rats and measured BDNF, a protein that nerve cells rely on, in the basal forebrain, a region linked with memory. A year earlier, a rodent study looked for signs of serotonin signalling in one brain area after the peptide was given.
People come later, and in small numbers. A Russian report from 1997 followed 30 patients in the early days after a stroke who were given Semax, and set the return of their movement beside 80 patients who went without it. Every patient had standard care, and the summary does not say how people were put into the two groups, so it is a comparison whose group assignment was not reported.
In 2020, a scan study recorded brain activity in 52 adults given Semax, Selank or a placebo, looking at how regions tied to worry and memory work together. A pattern on a scan is not the same as a change in daily life.
No large controlled trial of Semax sits in this record. The animal work describes rodents, and the human work is slight and mostly from one tradition.

Reading the Semax record
Start with who did the work. Nearly every paper on Semax comes from Russian teams, most of them in Moscow, and much of it is in Russian. That does not make it wrong, but it does mean one research tradition has told most of the story.
Then look at what was measured. The rat studies measured brain chemistry: a nerve-support protein and signs of serotonin activity. The 2020 scan study measured how brain areas work together. None of these is the same as an everyday outcome in a person.
