Also spelled Epitalon, the peptide is a chain of four amino acids built in the lab. Its model was an extract taken from the pineal gland of cattle, the pineal being a small gland in the brain.
Of 143 records found on PubMed for either spelling, 90 name V. Khavinson among the authors. Most of them come from one research group, the St. Petersburg Institute of Bioregulation and Gerontology, so a single institute stands behind most of what is known.

An outside group in Warsaw, Poland, surveyed a quarter century of cell and animal work in 2025. Their review also remarks that the peptide's basic chemistry has had little study.
The same year, a lab study added Epithalon to human cell lines and measured telomeres, the caps on the ends of DNA strands, along with telomerase, the enzyme that builds them.
The animal papers are older. A 2005 study gave Epithalon to elderly monkeys and measured melatonin, the sleep hormone, at night, and blood sugar. A 2002 study followed mice bred to develop breast tumors, recording their lifespan and their tumors.
Human trials are close to absent. The single human study located came from the founding group with few details, so it is not used here.

Reading the Epithalon record
Most papers on Epithalon share authors, and that matters when you weigh them. Ninety of 143 records list the same scientist. The 2025 review from Warsaw is useful for that reason: it comes from outside the founding group, and it points to gaps, such as how little is known about the peptide's basic chemistry.
